A lyrical portrait of artist and scholar Courtney Desiree Morris asks what the queer imagination makes possible in the face of erasure. Moving through intimate studio footage, photographic montage, and large-scale performance, the film explores queerness as a source of creativity, resilience, and hope.

I happened to meet Courtney on a windy deck at a film party, and we ended up talking for what felt like hours. I was intrigued by what she had to say about feminism and made the film simply to continue the conversation. To my surprise, she was not only a brilliant scholar but an extraordinary performer and artist—a perfect subject for my first film.

You work for months on a project, looking at someone again and again—cropping them, changing the color, sound-editing their voice, choosing which exact pieces of art and which exact pieces of the interview. I could go on and on. But then, finally—oh my God—you show the film to the subject. It is not easy.
